4 Ways to Know If You’re
Ready for a Credit Card

So, you want to get a credit card. It seems like it’s the right time. You’ve heard there are different types, and some of them are rewards credit cards. You know that they can be a good way to build credit. You’ve done a little bit of cursory Googling about options, but you’re still hesitating. If you’re nervous, here are a few ways to know if you’re ready to get a credit card.
1 You Have a Budget to Pay Your Credit Card
There’s one thing that credit cards aren’t, and that’s more income. When you open a credit card, it’s like opening a new loan. Banks promise that a certain amount of money will be available and you promise to pay off any amount you owe. The benefit, of course, is that they don’t force you to pay it off right away. BUT – when you don’t, banks charge interest. So, the smartest thing to do is to pay your credit card bill every month. The easiest way to know you can do that consistently, which is a great way to build credit, is to have a budget to pay your card monthly and stick to it.

2 You Like the Flexibility of a Credit Card

Sure, cash is king, but you can’t use cash online and these days some brick and mortar stores don’t take cash. Credit cards are the easiest way to sign up for Netflix, shop on Amazon, or whatever it is we need to do.

While you definitely can use your debit card, it’s helpful to have a different way to pay – plus if your debit card gets stolen, it can impact your cashflow that you will need for expenses.

3 You’ve Done Your Research

Credit cards are a commitment and there’s lots to choose from! When you’re choosing a credit card, especially if you don’t have great credit, make sure that you check out the fees and rates. It’s important to compare apples to apples when you’re doing this, so you should check your credit score to know what types of cards you may qualify for before you apply.

Maybe you’ve heard that if you pay your credit card bill, your credit score will go up. Well, it’s not that simple, but a credit card can be a great tool for you to improve your credit

4 You Want a Rewards Credit Card

Rewards credit cards aren’t only for those who have perfect credit anymore – you can get one even if your credit is not so perfect. All rewards credit card programs are set up differently, but the basics of credit card rewards are this: you use your card and pay your bill, and the credit card company gives you something in return. You definitely don’t get that when you’re using cash!

It’s always up to you to decide if getting a credit card is the right choice for you. There’s no doubt that it can have a lot of benefits, and if you’ve done your research and budget correctly, then the next step is up to you!
